The Frankfurt Future Congress is taking place online on 23 and 24 February 2021. In our thinkspace, we will be discussing why the demand for managers to show more empathy is misleading. Come and join the conversation.
The Frankfurt Future Congress will be held in February as a hybrid event, bringing together three key issues of the near future: digitisation, new work and sustainability.
INSITE invites you to join our thinkspace to discuss "Why the demand for managers to show more empathy is misleading"
- 24 February 2021, 13:15
- This will be a hybrid event
- Speaker: Dr Matthias Conradt, INSITE CEO
In recent years, thanks to current trends and the establishment of mental health risk assessments more and more attention has been given to the role of managers. Moving forwards, managers have to identify mental and physical difficulties, taking a targeted approach to addressing these issuesand offering support where appropriate. The latter often comes with demands for managers to be coached in social skills or even empathy so that they can better manage these duties.
INSITE wants to discuss the theorythat: the demand for more empathy/social skills is misleadingmost managers already have sufficient empathy or social skills and that such demands can even be counter-productive to core management responsibilities (looking after targets, making decisions, judgement calls).
Instead, we believe that requiring and promoting a respectful and polite atmosphere and providing as much clarity as possible regarding leeway and company rules are much more appropriate targets for successful teamwork than demanding empathy. Managers should also be generally encouraged to approach employees who are experiencing stress or problems with their mental health and offer and offering support where appropriate.
